The second model from Mount Tremper Watch Co. is called Cloud of Unknowing.

Cloud of Unknowing understands what can’t be grasped. It lets go of the endless stream of thoughts to see what neither comes nor goes. Inherently containing all things, Cloud of Unknowing has the power to transform whatever we encounter for the better. Whether it’s our relationships, the feelings in our heart, our the thoughts in our head, Cloud of Unknowing gives us the power to be free of the poisons in our lives.

While the construction and design of Cloud of Unknowing is done with care and expertise, we recognize that measuring time is fundamentally arbitrary. Instead, the uncontrived coarseness of Cloud of Unknowing reveals our expectations of perfection allowing us to meet each moment directly.

Mount Tremper Watch Co. offers Cloud of Unknowing with a white/blue or a black/green dial. 

For the light dial, a layer of translucent blue oil paint is applied followed by layers of white paint. Before the paint has dried, incense ash is lightly applied around the edge. Once dry, the dial is sanded by hand to reveal the dial’s silver Arabic numerals. Finally, like mountain peaks emerging from the clouds, the Mount Tremper Watch Co. logo is hand-stamped.

The dark dial follows a similar process. It begins with a layer of translucent green oil paint followed by layers of black paint. The dial is then sanded to reveal the numerals and stamped with the logo. The result is a highly dynamic, textured surface that fluctuates from iridescent green to inky black.

The very high-quality Swiss ETA 6479 caliber movement is the heart of Cloud of Unknowing. Originally designed for pocket-watches, the 6497 is a robust, dependable movement that can be maintained easily for years to come.

At Mount Tremper Watch Co., we believe a mechanical watch is a things of honesty. Unlike many of our digital devices, there are no mysteries here.

Through the case-back you can watch gears spin, levers click, and springs breath. Nothing is hidden. Yet, when you bring all the pieces together in just the right way, the watch comes to life. To enhance this drama, we’ve finished the bridge plates using a torched patina. With flowing tones of bronze, gold, purple, and blue, each piece is highly unique and will evolve over time.

Cloud of Unknowing comes with a 41mm water-resistant case manufactured from top quality Swiss stainless steel. The domed crystal on top and the see-through back are made from scratch-proof sapphire crystal.  

Before the movement and dial are inserted, the Mount Tremper Watch Co. case is subjected to a pain-staking process of hand sanding and aging to bring out a unique patina.

The inevitable scratches any watch acquires will not be blemishes with Cloud of Unknowing. Rather, they will be marks of character that only enrich its inherent beauty and individuality.

Both Cloud models are fitted with rugged Horween Chromexcel leather straps cut and sewn by hand in Finland.

The unique design is inspired by watch straps worn by fighter pilots in World War II. Typically, aviator watches were very large even by today’s standards. Cutting steps in the sides of the wide watch straps helped improve their comfort and flexibility.

Inspired by this history, these straps seemed like a fitting match for Cloud of Unknowing.
