Shoshin

SCROLL DOWN

Shoshin

This model from Mount Tremper Watch Co. is called Shoshin.

Shoshin describes the openness and innocence of someone who has no idea what they’re doing. In other words, a beginner. We don’t think much of beginners today. In the beginner’s mind there is a rare openness. When we’re open everything is new, everything is fresh, and everything is possible. From this mindset our cold, fixed world is transformed into something alive and awesome. And it’s not what you think.

While the construction and design of Shoshin is done with precision, there’s no pretense that time can be ‘captured’ in any real sense. Instead, the uncontrived delicateness of Shoshin challenges us to meet each moment simply and without judgement. With this open-mind we can see things as they really are: perfect and full of wondrous possibility.

Dial

Dial

Mount Tremper Watch Co. offers Shoshin with a white or black dial. Each version begins with a Swiss-made, silver-plated dial with Arabic numerals.

For the white dial, a layer of Japanese washi paper is affixed using handmade glue. Afterward, the numbers and minute markers are marked using handmade sumi ink. The dial is then sealed to allow for graceful aging while still protecting its fragile state.

The black dial begins by applying layer after layer of oil paint. Before another layer is applied, the dial is sanded by hand using a custom-made fiberglass brush. This gives each dial its own unique matte-satin finish. Finally, the numbers are aged and the minute markers are applied using a very fine brush.

Both versions have a weathered gold-plated hour hand. This is a reference to the so called golden hour just after sunrise and before sunset. While the sun's golden light in these moments is undeniably beautiful, finding beauty in each moment has nothing to do with the position of the sun.

Movement

Movement

At Mount Tremper Watch Co., we believe a mechanical watch is a things of honesty. Unlike many of our digital devices, there are no mysteries here.

Through the case-back you can watch gears spin, levers click, and springs breath. Nothing is hidden. Yet, when you bring all the pieces together in just the right way, the watch comes to life.

The very high-quality Swiss ETA 6498 caliber movement is the heart of Shoshin. Originally designed for pocket-watches, the 6498 is a robust, dependable movement that can be maintained easily for years to come.

Individual components of the nickel-plated steel movement have been sanded and aged to bring out the natural beauty of the metal. Performed entirely by hand in Brooklyn, this process in no way compromises the movement's function or reliability.

Case

Case

Shoshin comes with a 41mm water-proof case manufactured from top-quality Swiss stainless steel. The domed crystal on top and the see-through back are made from scratch-proof sapphire crystal.

Before the movement and dial are inserted, the Mount Tremper Watch Co. case is subjected to a pain-staking process of hand sanding and aging to bring out a unique patina.

The inevitable scratches any watch acquires will not be blemishes with Shoshin. Rather, they will be marks of character that only enrich its inherent beauty and individuality.

Strap

Strap

Both Shoshin models are fitted with Horween leather straps cut and sewn by hand by a British craftsman living in Tokyo.

The strap on the white model is made from elegant shell cordovan. The strap on the black dial is made from rugged chromexcel. Both are hand sewn using waxed Japanese linen and are unlined.

Most notably, these straps are not punched. This is so you can size your strap perfectly for your wrist. Simply visit your local cobbler and have 1-3 holes punched depending on whether your wrist size tends to fluctuate throughout the day. You'll find this one-time task will result in a cleaner look that is entirely your own.
